M4BL @ 10
Art & Design Manager/ Design Lead, 2024-2025
The Movement for Black Lives 10-Year Commemoration (M4BL@10) honored a decade of organizing towards “A Free Black Future”. I led our design team as we came up with a brand identity that honored and dignified the previous decade of work.
The branding would be used in print, digital, and experiential assets during the commemorative dinner and member meeting.
Inspiration
I pulled from two separate entities that I felt spoke to the moment my team and I were designing for: the Roaring 20s/Harlem Renaissance and Afrofuturism.
Being a century out from the bustling 1920s and from a time that helped define Black American culture, it felt appropriate to use as a muse. One of the fonts was directly inspired by Aaron Douglas’ typography for the literary magazine FIRE!!
We complimented this font with further art deco motifs, using Futura as the complimentary font and incorporating gilded patterns. We gave this a further twist by incorporating design inspired by African textiles and Afro-Americana symbols, such as fists and hibiscus flowers.
Style Guide
Below is the accompanying style guide that informed how M4BL@10 would look. We used the gilded gradient color for anything pertaining to the commemorative dinner, and solid colors for all other pieces. This includes two versions of the leading M4BL@10 symbols.
